Evaluation and Ethics in Generative AI-Driven UI/UX Design: A Systematic Literature Review
Morteza Khani Dehnoi1
Abstract :
Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI), particularly Large Language Models (LLMs) and diffusion models, is rapidly transforming UI/UX design workflows. However, two critical questions remain underexplored: how to evaluate GenAI-generated design outputs, and how to use GenAI responsibly. This paper presents a systematic literature review of studies published between 2020 and 2026, focusing on evaluation methods and ethical considerations in GenAI-driven UI/UX design. Through searches in ACM Digital Library, IEEE Xplore, Scopus, and Google Scholar, and after screening, key studies were categorized into three evaluation strands: human evaluation, automated evaluation (LLM-as-judge), and hybrid approaches. The main findings are threefold. First, no single evaluation approach is both valid and scalable: human evaluation is costly and non-scalable, while automated evaluation is contaminated by model bias. Second, the gap between automated and human judgment is substantial: GPT-4o shows weak correlation with human ratings (r < 0.26), and LLMs exhibit stable but divergent severity patterns (ChatGPT > Claude > Gemini). Third, ethics in the existing literature is examined perceptually rather than operationally: bias, transparency, ownership, and trust are identified as designer concerns, but no measurement protocol or enforcement mechanism is proposed. Based on these findings, a three-layer Responsible Evaluation Framework is proposed, combining automated filtering, human evaluation for subjective dimensions, and mandatory ethical auditing
