Artificial Intelligence and Computing in Civil Engineering

Morteza Khani Dehnoi1

Abstract :
The rapid advancement of computing technologies and artificial intelligence (AI) has fundamentally transformed the landscape of civil engineering, enabling a transition from conventional engineering practices toward intelligent, data-driven, and autonomous decision-making systems. Modern civil engineering increasingly relies on advanced computational methods, including machine learning, deep learning, computer vision, cloud computing, digital twins, Building Information Modeling (BIM), Internet of Things (IoT), and high-performance computing, to improve the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of critical infrastructure. Unlike traditional computational approaches that primarily focused on numerical simulations and structural analysis, contemporary AI-based systems are capable of learning from large-scale engineering data, recognizing complex patterns, predicting structural behavior, optimizing resource allocation, and supporting real-time decision-making under uncertain conditions. This paper presents a comprehensive review of the integration of advanced computing and artificial intelligence technologies into civil engineering. The study examines the evolution of intelligent computational methods and analyzes their applications across multiple engineering domains, including structural health monitoring, construction automation, transportation systems, geotechnical engineering, water resources management, disaster prediction, and smart city development. Particular emphasis is placed on recent breakthroughs in generative artificial intelligence, explainable artificial intelligence (XAI), reinforcement learning, and digital twin technologies, which are reshaping the future of engineering practice. Beyond reviewing current applications, the paper critically discusses existing technical challenges such as data quality, model interpretability, cybersecurity, computational scalability, ethical considerations, and the shortage of interdisciplinary expertise.
