Abstract :
Microplastic contamination in aquaculture has raised concerns regarding feed quality, fish health, and seafood safety. Aquafeeds may introduce plastic particles through contaminated ingredients and manufacturing processes, while production water, equipment, and packaging represent additional potential sources. This review critically evaluates evidence published between 2020 and 2026 concerning microplastics in aquafeeds, their potential transfer into farmed fish, analytical methods, and implications for human exposure. Published research has reported an average abundance of 5.5 ± 1.6 particles/g in fishmeal from ten producing countries and 1,130 ± 259.07 particles/kg in commercial fishfeeds sampled across six countries. However, differences in sampling procedures, particle-size thresholds, and analytical methods limit direct comparisons. Importantly, particle detection in feed or gastrointestinal contents does not establish translocation into edible muscle. Reliable assessment requires contamination controls, validated recovery procedures, and chemical confirmation using techniques such as Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and Raman microspectroscopy. Current evidence supports monitoring feed ingredients, production environments, and edible tissues, but does not independently establish a quantified human-health risk from microplastics in farmed-fish muscle. Future research should prioritize matched source-to-tissue studies, standardized analytical protocols, and realistic dietary-exposure assessments. A harmonized framework distinguishing contamination, ingestion, tissue translocation, and consumer exposure is essential for improving aquaculture monitoring and seafood risk assessment.
